Addtime:2025-12-26Hits:39

The development process of Pickball can be summarized as the following stages:

1.Origin and Entrepreneurship(1965-1970s)

In 1965,Pickball was born on Bainbridge Island near Seattle,USA,and was co invented by three friends:Joel Pritchard,Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum.Initially,to solve the boredom problem of children at family gatherings, they improvised this sport using table tennis rackets, plastic perforated balls, and lowered height badminton nets.

Naming origin:There are two versions of the name"Pickleball",one of which is derived from the Prichard family's dog"Pickles"who loves chasing balls;Another theory is derived from the nautical term"pickle boat"(a ship temporarily pieced together by a mixed crew),echoing the"mix and match"nature of sports.

Early rules:In 1972,Pickball was officially registered as a sport and the first version of rules was established, specifying the size of the court(the same as the badminton doubles court),net height(86.36 centimeters in the middle),and scoring method.

2.Standardization and Promotion(1980-2000s)

In 1984,the United States Pickball Association(USAPA)was established to promote rule improvement(such as the"double bounce rule"and"non interception zone"),and began organizing community events.

In the 1990s,baseball became popular in all 50 states of the United States, with the emergence of composite rackets(fiberglass/carbon fiber)and professional sports. The first Pickball website was launched in 1999.

In 2005,USAPA became a non-profit organization and held the first American Championship in 2009,with over 400 participants.

3.The outbreak of globalization(2010 present)

International expansion:Since 2010,Canada,Europe,Asia(Japan,Singapore,etc.)have gradually introduced it.In 2012,it was introduced to Guangzhou,China, and in 2017,the first domestic Pickball Association was established in Shenzhen.

Competitive development:

In 2016,the International Federation of Pickers(IFP)was established to promote global events such as the Bainbridge Cup International Championship.

In 2024,it will become a performance event at the Paris Olympics, and China will host its first national championship(Henan Hebi)and tour(over 300 events throughout the year).

Number of participants:As of 2025,there will be over 36 million players worldwide, with 8.9 million in the United States;only Guangdong Province in China has over 200000 annual participants.

4.Cultural and Social Influence

National friendly:Due to its characteristics of"low threshold, low cost, and low risk"(high fun, high stickiness, and high safety),it has become a sport that crosses age groups, covering teenagers to silver haired groups.

Industry growth:Global equipment sales will reach 204 million US dollars in 2023,with a year-on-year increase of 1100%in Pick racket sales during China's"6.18"period.Li Ning and other brands have launched professional product lines.

Social attributes:Doubles based design enhances interaction, becoming a new way of workplace stress relief and community networking, with celebrities(such as Bill Gates and the Kardashian family)participating to further boost the trend.

5.Localization process in China

From 2012 to 2020,it was spontaneously introduced by the public and promoted in the Pearl River Delta region, hosting events such as the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Invitational Tournament.

After 2023,the General Administration of Sport of China will establish the Pickball Working Committee, release the 2024 version of the Competition Rules, and establish a competition system(such as tours and youth competitions).Liaoning Dandong,Jiangxi Shangyou and other places have created the"hometown of Pickball"through venue construction.

Future Trends

The International Olympic Committee is considering including baseball as an official event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

China plans to expand the"event+"model through"entering scenic spots and commercial districts",further activating the consumption of national fitness.
